Setting the Stage - Does the Sequel Deliver?
Rarely do sequels outperform the originals, but every now and then, a sequel comes along that builds on everything that made the original so special—and somehow makes it even better. While these sequels may not always introduce groundbreaking new features, they don’t necessarily need to. Instead, they refine, expand, and polish the experience to surpass expectations.
Think of movie classics like Rocky II or Back to the Future Part II. These sequels revisited beloved themes, characters, and settings, while amplifying the magic of the originals. But does this kind of sequel magic translate to video games as well? Let’s dive into Alwa’s Legacy to find out!
Story/Concept – A Familiar World with New Mysteries
In Alwa’s Legacy, you once again step into the shoes of Zo, the heroine from Alwa’s Awakening. After her initial adventure, Zo attempts to return home but is blocked by a familiar foe and stripped of her memory. To restore her memory and save the world of Alwa, she must collect magical gemstones scattered across the land, each guarded by formidable bosses.
The narrative is straightforward and doesn’t aim to be deep, much like the games it draws inspiration from. Think of it as the Super Mario Bros. approach—simple but effective. The joy isn’t in the storytelling itself but in the journey through the charming, interconnected Metroidvania world.

Gameplay/Controls – Bigger, Better, and More Strategic
The gameplay in Alwa’s Legacy retains the core mechanics of its predecessor but expands them in exciting ways. Zo wields her magical staff once again, but now, collected orbs can be used as currency to upgrade staff abilities. The upgrade system offers flexibility, allowing players to prioritize abilities based on their playstyle.
For instance, you can unlock the bubble-creation ability early on or reallocate orbs from one upgrade to another if you need a different power to progress. This level of customization adds a layer of strategy absent from the first game.
In addition to the returning magical abilities, Zo now gains passive abilities such as air dashes, spike-walking, and even time-slowing mechanics that play a pivotal role in puzzle-solving. The introduction of dungeon-like temples, reminiscent of 2D Zelda games, adds depth to exploration. These temples feature unique abilities and culminate in memorable boss battles.
Simply put, Alwa’s Legacy takes everything great about the first game and enhances it with more variety and strategic depth.

Graphics/Performance/Art Style – A Leap to 16-Bit Glory
While Alwa’s Awakening captured the essence of 8-bit visuals, Alwa’s Legacy elevates the aesthetic to the 16-bit era, reminiscent of Super Castlevania IV or A Link to the Past. The pixel art is vibrant and colorful, with a broader palette that brings Alwa’s environments to life.
The improved sprite work is immediately noticeable, with more detailed animations and larger, more expressive characters. Whether you’re traversing lush forests or dark, atmospheric temples, the game’s art style shines in every frame. For fans of retro-inspired visuals, Alwa’s Legacy is a feast for the eyes.

Sound – Nostalgia with an Upgraded Symphony
The music in Alwa’s Legacy mirrors the transition from 8-bit to 16-bit, with familiar themes reimagined at a higher sound quality. The soundtrack is as enchanting as it is nostalgic, perfectly complementing the game’s retro feel. Fans of the original’s music will appreciate the leap in audio fidelity, and new players will find the tunes captivating from start to finish.
Audience – Who’s This Game For?
This game is tailor-made for Metroidvania fans and anyone who enjoyed Alwa’s Awakening. Additionally, fans of classic 2D Zelda titles or modern games like Shantae will find plenty to love here. The game’s blend of exploration, puzzles, and boss fights is a love letter to retro gamers while still being accessible to newer audiences.

Content – Trophy Hunters, Take Note
One notable challenge for completionists is the Pacifist Trophy, which requires players to finish the game without killing a single enemy. Even one accidental kill locks you out of the trophy, forcing a fresh run. While it adds replay value for trophy hunters, it might frustrate those seeking a more relaxed experience.

Difficulty/Grind/Pacing – Balanced and Rewarding
Alwa’s Legacy strikes a near-perfect balance between challenge and accessibility. Unlimited lives make death less punishing, but the game’s intricate puzzles, boss attack patterns, and platforming sections demand patience and precision.
There’s no unnecessary grinding unless you’re aiming for the Platinum Trophy, which requires finding all the blue orbs. For players simply looking to explore and enjoy, the game’s pacing feels just right.

Emotion/Charm – A Nostalgic Masterpiece
What truly sets Alwa’s Legacy apart is its ability to evoke nostalgia while feeling fresh and modern. The game captures the essence of the 16-bit era, blending retro mechanics with thoughtful new features.
Much like Top Gun: Maverick recaptured the spirit of its 1986 predecessor, Alwa’s Legacy feels like a time capsule from the 90s, with its dungeons, abilities, and boss designs paying homage to classics of the era. It’s a masterclass in blending old-school charm with contemporary design.

Fun Factor – A Blast from Start to Finish
From start to finish, Alwa’s Legacy is a joy to play. Its expanded abilities, vibrant visuals, and engaging puzzles make it even more enjoyable than its predecessor. Whether you’re a fan of the original or diving into the series for the first time, this game offers a genuinely fun and rewarding experience.
Gametime – A Tight and Satisfying Adventure
My playthrough clocked in at around 10 hours, similar to my time with Alwa’s Awakening. The game’s length feels just right, offering a satisfying journey without overstaying its welcome.

Legacy – A Worthy Successor
Alwa’s Legacy does what every great sequel should—build on the strengths of its predecessor while introducing meaningful improvements. It’s a love letter to retro gaming that manages to stand on its own as a modern classic.

My Final Thoughts
If you enjoyed Alwa’s Awakening, Alwa’s Legacy is an absolute must-play. Its enhanced gameplay, stunning visuals, and nostalgic charm make it one of the best indie Metroidvania titles I’ve played.
Available now for PS4, Switch, and PC, Alwa’s Legacy is a game I wholeheartedly recommend. Whether you’re a seasoned retro gamer or new to the genre, this adventure is well worth your time.
